Police Kill One, Injure Others as Gang Attempts Transformer Theft in Thika
In a dramatic early morning operation on Saturday, police in Thika town foiled an attempted transformer theft, resulting in the fatal shooting of one suspected robber. The incident, which occurred around 4 a.m. in the Kang’oki area, saw a gang of seven attempting to dismantle the transformer after cutting off power to the neighborhood.
According to Thika police chief Lawrence Muchangi, officers arrived just as the gang was about to make off with parts of the transformer. Upon confrontation, the suspects clashed with the officers, leading to the immediate shooting of one gang member while the others managed to escape, reportedly nursing gunshot wounds.
Chief Muchangi appealed to local hospitals to report any patients seeking treatment for gunshot injuries to aid in the search for the remaining suspects. His remarks underscore a commitment to close the net around organized crime targeting key infrastructure.
The attempted theft is part of a broader trend affecting power supply stability in the region. Dominic Thuo, Chief Security Officer for Kenya Power’s North Eastern region, highlighted that over 25 transformers have been stolen in Kiambu County in the last six months, amounting to a loss of approximately Ksh.25 million.
Thuo commended the police for their swift response, calling on residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. He emphasized that community involvement is crucial in protecting vital infrastructure and preventing further incidents.
