Kericho Governor Eric Mutai is facing an uncertain political future after pleading with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to halt an impeachment motion against him. The motion was officially tabled at the county assembly by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony on Tuesday, marking a significant turn in Governor Mutai’s political journey.

The MCAs have accused Governor Mutai of four major violations, including alleged gross violations of the constitution and other laws, abuse of office, and claims of gross misconduct. These allegations have raised concerns about the governor’s leadership and brought his tenure under intense scrutiny.

Faced with this threat to his position, Governor Mutai made an emotional plea to the MCAs on Thursday, asking for forgiveness and leniency. He passionately reminded them that he is human, saying, “I plead with you to sympathise with me, I am also someone’s child. I am a father of three young children. The eldest is in class seven, the second is in grade three, and my youngest is still breastfeeding. To you, the people of Kericho, no one doesn’t wrong.”

The governor emphasized that he has been fair in his dealings with the MCAs, helping them individually and collectively without bias. “To the MCAs led by the majority leader here, I ask for your forgiveness. I might have made mistakes like any other human being, I might have wronged you, but we have worked together in good and bad times,” he added.

Governor Mutai called on the MCAs to exercise compassion and offer him a second chance, acknowledging that leaders, too, are prone to making mistakes. “If you must cane me, do so, using a light stick,” he appealed.

In contrast, MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who moved the motion, argued that Governor Mutai’s actions have brought the office of the governor, the assembly, and the people of Kericho into ridicule, embarrassment, and disrepute. He claimed that Mutai’s continued stay in office would hinder the effective delivery of services to the county.

County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai announced that the assembly would hear and decide on the matter on October 2, where Governor Mutai will have an opportunity to defend himself against the accusations.

The tension around this political showdown was evident earlier when police had to contain a group of supporters who attempted to storm the county assembly, demonstrating the high stakes of this unfolding saga.
