Patient Data Made Accessible: Kilifi Rolls Out Cutting-Edge EMR System
Kilifi County has taken a groundbreaking step towards healthcare digitization with the introduction of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, a transformative initiative spearheaded by Governor Gideon Mung’aro.
The EMR system streamlines healthcare delivery by enabling doctors to securely store patient records online, allowing easy access and sharing of vital treatment histories among medical professionals. This technology tracks comprehensive medical data, including diagnoses, treatments, medications, and other essential health information.
Speaking during an interview on NTV, Governor Mung’aro highlighted the pressing need for the innovation, citing patient challenges with outdated record-keeping practices. “We have come up with a new system called the EMR to address persistent patient problems. It was common for someone to travel from as far as Ganze only to realize they didn’t have their doctor’s book when seeking treatment,” he explained.
The governor further revealed plans to expand the system’s reach, ensuring even the remotest parts of Kilifi benefit. “Half of Kilifi is already enrolled into the system. In the near future, even our nurses will not need to store those bulky files. Each ward nurse will be equipped with a tablet containing all patient history,” he stated.
Beyond convenience, the initiative has significantly improved healthcare efficiency and revenue. Governor Mung’aro noted an impressive rise in turnover profits from Ksh1 million to Ksh7 million since the system’s implementation. Additionally, he emphasized its potential to address long-standing issues like medicine theft in public hospitals. “We are already seeing transformations,” he added.
This is not the first time Mung’aro has focused on healthcare transformation. In January last year, he waived ambulance medical charges for Kilifi residents, making healthcare more accessible.
The EMR system holds the potential to revolutionize Kenya’s healthcare sector, setting an example for other counties to embrace similar digital advancements.
