Patient Arrested After Snatching Nurse’s Phone
A 17-year-old suspect was apprehended on Monday, September 2, at Machakos Level 5 Hospital after allegedly stealing a nurse’s mobile phone during treatment.
The suspect, posing as a patient, was attended to at the hospital’s Diabetes Centre. Shortly after the consultation, the suspect seized the opportunity to swipe the nurse’s phone, which had been left on a desk.
The nurse, who had stepped away momentarily to consult with a colleague, quickly realized his phone was missing and reported the incident. Hospital security, reviewing CCTV footage, identified the suspect, leading to a swift search and his capture at the outpatient area as he attempted to leave the premises.
The phone was recovered from the suspect’s sweater pocket, and he was handed over to the police.
The Machakos County Chief Officer of Public Health, Simon Simba Mwako, condemned the act and affirmed that security measures at the facility have been enhanced, including mandatory identification tags for all staff, to prevent future incidents.
This arrest follows a similar case just a week prior, where two individuals were arrested in connection with a phone theft ring targeting patients.
