Outrage as Super Metro Buses Spotted on Roads Despite NTSA Suspension
Despite a recent ban by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Super Metro buses have been reportedly seen operating on Nairobi’s major highways. This has sparked considerable concern among Kenyans.
Social media platforms buzzed with reports on Thursday, March 20th, as citizens shared sightings of fully loaded Super Metro minibuses. One was seen traversing the Thika Super Highway, while another was documented traveling along Mombasa Road.
This defiance occurred despite NTSA’s explicit warning against using these vehicles. Traffic police were also instructed to impound any Super Metro buses found in operation.
However, Super Metro’s management strongly condemned the NTSA’s action, labeling it a blanket condemnation of their Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO).
During a press conference in Nairobi, company officials criticized the NTSA for what they perceived as a lack of thorough investigation into a recent passenger’s death, which preceded the suspension.
The SACCO bosses expressed deep disappointment over the suspension, highlighting the potential for mass unemployment. They also assured the public that they would appeal the NTSA’s decision.
“We are very disappointed by this blanket condemnation of SACCOs,” a Super Metro spokesperson stated. “We are worried about NTSA’s interference with a company that has over 600 vehicles, valued at over Ksh1.4 billion.”
“This SACCO supports over 500 owners who have families to feed. As a federation, we have conducted our own investigation. To date, no passenger has given a statement claiming they were pushed,” he added.
The NTSA announced the suspension of Super Metro’s operations on Thursday morning, citing non-compliance with the Public Service Vehicle Regulations.
“The Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the company fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, and other set conditions,” the NTSA declared.
“The public is cautioned against boarding Super Metro Limited vehicles. The Traffic Department is mandated to impound any vehicles found operating against this suspension.”
