Opposition Gains Global Support Amid Venezuelan Election Dispute
In a move that has heightened the political crisis in Venezuela, authorities have ratified Nicolas Maduro’s election victory, despite a growing number of nations recognizing his opposition rival, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, as the true winner. The oil-rich nation has been engulfed in protests since the disputed presidential vote, with both Maduro and the opposition urging their supporters to demonstrate this weekend.
On Friday, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Uruguay joined the United States and Peru in rejecting the official results and recognizing Gonzalez Urrutia as the president-elect. Venezuela’s election authority, however, ratified Maduro’s win, claiming he secured 52% of the vote compared to Gonzalez Urrutia’s 43%.
Maduro, 61, responded fiercely to the criticism, threatening opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and Gonzalez Urrutia, declaring they “should be behind bars.” He has also called for daily mobilization and planned “the mother of all marches” to celebrate what he describes as the victory of peace.
Gonzalez Urrutia, who did not attend a Supreme Court hearing requested by Maduro, has pushed for a detailed vote count to ensure transparency. Opposition leaders, including Enrique Marquez, emphasized the importance of voting records for peace and transparency.
Machado, who was barred from running, wrote in The Wall Street Journal about fearing for her life and urged supporters to assert the truth about the opposition’s victory. Meanwhile, Maduro has accused the opposition of plotting a coup, with the NGO Foro Penal reporting 11 deaths in protests earlier this week.
The international community remains divided, with top US diplomat Antony Blinken and various Latin American nations supporting Gonzalez Urrutia. Meanwhile, calls for an impartial verification of the election results continue to grow amid the ongoing political turmoil.
