Operation Ondoa Fisi” Nets 60 Hyenas Amid Deadly Attacks
In a daring and coordinated effort, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully captured 60 hyenas in Juja as part of the ongoing “Operation Ondoa Fisi.” This urgent mission was launched in response to a series of brutal hyena attacks that left the community in fear and mourning.
The operation, which kicked off on September 8, 2024, followed the tragic deaths of two residents, including five-year-old Njoroge Gitau, who fell victim to a hyena attack on September 4, 2024.
In a bid to restore safety and normalcy in Juja sub-county, the operation is being led by Joseph Dadacha, Senior Assistant Director for the Central Rift Conservation Area.
It has seen the deployment of officers from Nairobi, Laikipia, and Nakuru, working tirelessly to round up and relocate the hyenas that have been terrorizing the area.
Some hyenas have been killed as part of the efforts to contain the situation, which escalated further when a 52-year-old woman was mauled to death while returning from the market. The series of attacks triggered outrage among local residents, prompting them to demand swift action from the authorities.
To prevent further tragedies, KWS has intensified patrols in high-risk areas, such as Nyacaba, Athi, Juja Farm, Gwa Kigwe, and Muthara Village, in a bid to protect residents from further attacks.
In response to the escalating human-wildlife conflict, President William Ruto has introduced a Ksh. 960 million compensation scheme to support families affected by these tragic attacks.
This government initiative aims to alleviate the burden on victims’ families as efforts continue to mitigate the wildlife threat in the region.
