Oparanya Warns of Resignation If Ruto Administration Fails on MSME Agenda
Nairobi, Kenya – In a bold and unwavering stance, Wycliffe Oparanya, the newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), has declared that he will step down from his position if the current administration under President William Ruto fails to implement his proposed strategies for the sector.
Speaking passionately during a church service in Western Kenya, Oparanya highlighted his deep commitment to the development of MSMEs and the broader economic landscape. He emphasized that his decision to join President Ruto’s Cabinet was driven by a desire to replicate the success he achieved as the former Governor of Kakamega County, where his administration was praised for significant infrastructure development, healthcare improvements, and robust support for small businesses.
“You saw the work I did in Kakamega, and that is why these people looked around and agreed that I can help in delivering,” Oparanya asserted, referring to his transformative projects in Kakamega.
Oparanya’s appointment to the MSMEs docket is widely regarded as a strategic move by President Ruto to harness his extensive experience in local governance and economic management. However, Oparanya was unequivocal in stating that his continued service in the Cabinet is contingent on the government’s willingness to heed his advice and implement the strategies necessary for the sector’s growth.
“I will help them, but when they fail to take my advice, I will resign and come back home because if you want to be assisted, you must accept,” Oparanya declared.
During his vetting by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Oparanya promised to revolutionize the MSME sector, building on his successful transformation of the milk business in Kakamega. He also vowed to introduce changes to the Hustler Fund, a key project of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, ensuring that a proper legal framework, management board, and staff are in place to manage the fund.
Oparanya is now at the helm of one of the most critical dockets in President Ruto’s administration, with the responsibility to uplift Kenyans at the bottom of the economic pyramid. However, his firm stance signals that he will not hesitate to walk away if his strategies are not implemented, leaving the future of MSMEs in the balance.
