Officers Arrested in Garissa for Alleged Fraud Scheme, Ksh.73K Seized
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers stationed in Garissa over their alleged involvement in a fraudulent scheme that exploited casual employees.
The officers, identified as Conservator Elphas Tembu Wesonga and Accountant Ibrahim Aden Hussein, are accused of inflating payments meant for casual workers and subsequently demanding that the excess amounts be returned to them.
EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed the arrests, detailing that the officers had been depositing inflated payments into the bank accounts of unsuspecting casual workers under the guise of legitimate wages. Once the funds were credited, the workers were coerced into withdrawing the excess amounts and handing them over to the officers.
An operation conducted by the EACC on Tuesday led to the arrest of the two suspects, with Ksh.73,000 recovered, believed to be part of the day’s collection from the fraudulent activities. Investigations suggest that the money collected through this scheme was shared among the officers and their superiors, pointing to a broader web of corruption within the department.
The two suspects were taken to the EACC’s North Eastern Regional Offices in Garissa, where they were processed before being transferred to the Garissa Police Station. They remain in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings as investigations continue.
