ODM’s Next Move? Amisi Reveals Raila’s Take on Gachagua’s Exit Strategy
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has shed light on the rationale behind ODM MPs’ support for the recent push to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking at a burial ceremony in Kiminini, Amisi disclosed details of a strategic conversation he had with Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister and ODM party leader, regarding the impeachment’s broader implications.
According to Amisi, he consulted Raila about ODM’s stance on Gachagua’s impeachment, questioning the wisdom of focusing on internal rivalries between President William Ruto and his deputy. Amisi recalled Raila’s response, quoting him: “If you wanted both to go home and a chance has presented itself to send one of them away, why not send him (Gachagua) away first? Because it is easier to send them home one by one.”
The legislator emphasized that the move to support the ouster was, in part, guided by directives from Raila, who has remained a powerful voice within the Azimio la Umoja coalition. In his address, Amisi also warned President Ruto, suggesting that the President’s political path could become tenuous if he disregarded the shifting dynamics.
Amisi’s revelations may stir ripples within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, as ODM leaders seemed to have been edging toward cooperation with President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allies. However, Raila Odinga made his stance clear last month, stressing that ODM would remain within the Azimio coalition, ruling out any partnership with the Kenya Kwanza administration—a position echoed by ODM deputy Godfrey Osotsi.
Despite political tensions, President Ruto has been steering clear of open party disputes, instead dedicating efforts to the promises he made during the 2022 campaign. On Sunday, November 3, he briefly commented on his working relationship with Raila, stating, “Raila collaborated with me to bring Kenya together without caring which party we were from.” The President noted that both the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza manifestos emphasized a shared commitment to healthcare and housing.
While Ruto refrained from direct criticism, he subtly hinted at the importance of staying focused on development, a possible indirect reminder to Gachagua to prioritize Kenya’s agenda.
