NTSA Advises Drivers on Safe Road Use Before Heavy Rains Begin
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has given drivers a warning. Heavy rains are expected across various parts of the country this week.
Because these weather conditions will make driving difficult, the NTSA is telling drivers to be extra careful to stay safe on the roads.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the NTSA stressed the importance of using fog lights. These lights help reduce glare and improve how well drivers can see during heavy rain, fog, or mist.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department’s latest seven-day weather forecast, from March 18th to 24th, 2025, a lot of rain is expected in many areas. This includes the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Coast. Cities like Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Kisumu will also be affected.
The forecast says there will be periods of heavy downpours. These downpours could cause flooding and make it hard to see on the roads. Drivers should stay alert and change how they drive based on the weather.
The NTSA specifically recommends that drivers use fog lights during heavy rain. This helps them see the road better and ensures that other drivers can see them easily.
However, the NTSA warns against using high beam headlights. They reflect off the rain and mist, making visibility worse. Fog lights should be turned off when visibility gets better to avoid blinding other drivers.
This warning comes after many road accidents during the rainy season. NTSA data shows that in January 2025 alone, there were over 1,200 reported road accidents. Many of these were caused by poor visibility and slippery roads from heavy rain.
In comparison, during the long rains of 2024, which are typically from March to May, there was a big increase in accidents. Flooding and waterlogged roads led to many crashes and deaths.
The NTSA has repeated that road safety during the rainy season needs everyone to work together. Drivers should slow down, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden braking, which can cause skidding on wet roads.
Pedestrians and cyclists should also wear reflective clothing and use designated crossings. This helps drivers see them better.
Besides the immediate dangers of heavy rain, the NTSA has pointed out the risk of flooding. Flooding can make some roads impossible to drive on. Drivers should avoid driving through flooded areas. The water’s depth can be misleading, and strong currents can sweep vehicles away.
The NTSA’s warning is very timely, as the long rainy season is known for having some of the most dangerous driving conditions of the year.
Last year, during the long rains, several major highways were affected by flooding. This caused long traffic jams and many accidents.
