Nairobi residents should brace for significant road closures on Sunday, October 27, as the city hosts the 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. Organizers have announced a number of key route closures from 11:59 p.m. on October 26 until 1:30 p.m. on October 27 to ensure a smooth event for the thousands of participants expected to take part.
The race will kick off at Uhuru Gardens along Langata Road, with participants competing for cash prizes and a share of the KSh 12.9 million prize pool. Roads to be affected include the Southern Bypass, Mombasa Road, Ngong Road, Likoni Road, Lenana Road, and Waiyaki Way. The 15-kilometer stretch from Karen Shopping Centre to Kikuyu Town on the Southern Bypass will be inaccessible, and motorists are advised to use Dagoretti Road as an alternative.
Organizers have also announced alternative routes for popular destinations. Vehicles heading from Mombasa Road to Karen will need to use Lang’ata Road, while access to the Ole Sereni Hotel will be redirected through NextGen Mall. According to Peter Gitau, chairman of the organizing committee, extensive planning has been put in place to ensure minimal disruption and a world-class marathon experience for participants.
This year’s marathon promises heightened excitement with a record-breaking 25,000 runners registered, surpassing the expected 20,000. Participants will compete in 5km, 10km, 21km, and the full marathon categories. With KSh 2 million prizes set for the top male and female finishers, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon will offer intense competition and unforgettable moments for runners and spectators alike
