Nigeria’s Floods Claim Two Young Lives in Building Collapse
Tragedy struck in north-western Nigeria as two children lost their lives when the building they were in collapsed due to severe flooding. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that the incident occurred in Katsina, one of the hardest-hit states in the ongoing flood crisis. A third child was also injured in the collapse, adding to the growing toll of destruction and despair.
Nigeria has been grappling with weeks of relentless flooding, which has claimed at least 179 lives and displaced tens of thousands. The disaster has not only affected homes but also devastated farmlands, with over 107,000 hectares washed away, raising alarms about food security in a country already facing economic turmoil.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the widespread devastation, emphasizing the urgent need for the nation to address environmental challenges and build a climate-resilient future. The floods have compounded the hardships faced by Nigerians, who are already dealing with rising food prices and the worst economic crisis in a generation.
The UN’s refugee agency described the floods as a “devastating” event, noting that many of those displaced were already vulnerable, having fled their homes due to militant violence in the region. The catastrophe recalls the 2022 floods, Nigeria’s worst in over a decade, which claimed over 600 lives and displaced 1.3 million people.
