Nakuru MCAs Decide on Susan Kihika’s Impeachment Following Senator Tabitha Karanja Call
A section of Nakuru County Assembly members has strongly dismissed calls by Senator Tabitha Karanja Keroche to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Susan Kihika.
The MCAs criticized the senator for making demands from a distance rather than formally addressing the assembly, as required by law.
MCAs Slam Senator’s Approach
Led by Majority Leader William Mutai, the MCAs accused Karanja of failing to engage them directly. According to Mutai, the senator has a designated seat in the county assembly, allowing her to address them in an official capacity. However, she has allegedly chosen to issue directives from outside the assembly.
“The senator has the right and an allocated seat to address us on matters of governance. Instead, she has been making pronouncements from afar and expects us to act on them,” Mutai stated.
He further noted that while some of the issues raised by Karanja may be valid, she has not followed the proper procedures to introduce them in the assembly.
“She has been making some negative remarks without presenting them before us formally. It would be respectful and appropriate for her to come to the assembly, state her concerns, and even seek clarifications,” added Keringet Ward MCA.
The county legislators pointed out that since the 2022 General Election, Karanja has not formally requested to address them as stipulated in the constitution.
Senator Accused of Failing in Oversight Role
Nominated MCA Hassan Duale echoed similar sentiments, claiming Karanja had failed to collaborate with them to strengthen governance at the county level. He specifically took issue with her comments regarding Governor Kihika’s maternity leave, calling them inappropriate for a fellow woman leader.
“The senator should stop attacking Susan Kihika. The county government’s programs are running smoothly, and as a mother, she should be supporting, not criticizing, another woman leader who is taking a legally recognized leave of absence,” Duale remarked.
The MCAs emphasized that they are currently engaged in public participation exercises to determine priority projects for the county. They urged the senator to step up and support these initiatives instead of attempting to create divisions.
