Nairobi Hospital Management Under Fire for Alleged Mistreatment of Medics
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has raised alarm over what it describes as mistreatment and harassment of doctors at the Nairobi Hospital. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah revealed that medical professionals at the facility are working under hostile conditions, fearing victimisation and even job loss.
“The Nairobi Hospital management has continued to harass and mistreat our members, reduce their medical cover in the name of financial constraints, while stories of financial mismanagement echo along the corridors. The sweat of hardworking health workers is being enjoyed by a few people who have become overnight millionaires,” said Atellah.
He further alleged that the institution’s toxic work environment has forced several medics to resign, while others stay on under duress. Atellah warned that unless the hospital’s management addresses these issues within seven days, the union will mobilize its members to go on strike.
AGM Disrupted by Alleged Goons
The union also accused Nairobi Hospital Board Chairperson Chris Bichage of orchestrating chaos during an Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on December 4, 2024. According to KMPDU, hired goons posing as legitimate members of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) disrupted the meeting, preventing attempts to impeach the hospital’s leadership.
“Doctors and distinguished members of this once great hospital were abused in broad daylight when the disgraceful and rogue board chairman and his stooges hired goons to mishandle and beat up real members keen on rescuing the hospital from imminent collapse,” said the KMPDU SG.
Calls for Action and Resignations
The union has called on various stakeholders, including the Kenya Hospital Association, Admitting Staff Association, Nairobi Hospital employees, and government agencies, to intervene and save the hospital.
KMPDU has demanded the resignation of the entire board of directors, led by Chairperson Chris Bichage and the acting CEO, as part of the reforms needed to restore the institution.
