Mwengi Mutuse Calls Gachagua’s Impeachment ‘A Victory for Democracy
Kibwezi West Member of Parliament, Mwengi Mutuse, made a firm defense of the recent impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, asserting that the decision serves the country’s best interests.
Speaking at the funeral of Mama Lenah Gaciri, mother to George Murugara, in Tharaka Nithi County, Mutuse urged Gachagua to exercise “wisdom over strength” as he confronts his ousting.
Mutuse, who moved the impeachment motion in Parliament, addressed the issue publicly for the first time, stating he had previously refrained from discussing it in gatherings to avoid undue speculation.
But recent events compelled him to clarify his stance. “Since we finished this work at the National Assembly and moved to the Senate, I’ve been avoiding public discussions on this. If I don’t speak on it here, bear with me,” he said.
He urged Gachagua to consider the constitutional principles that define Kenya’s democracy. Mutuse quoted a European saying, emphasizing that “strength must give way to wisdom.” He suggested that Gachagua’s persistence in challenging his impeachment is futile in the face of democratic processes.
“Kenya is a democracy founded on a Constitutional order we created in 2010. In a democracy, numbers matter and have meaning,” Mutuse added, pointing out the overwhelming votes for impeachment, with 282 MPs and 53 Senators endorsing the motion.
Mutuse’s comments come as Gachagua continues his legal battle, with his lawyers recently securing a court injunction to halt the swearing-in of Kithure Kindiki, Gachagua’s nominated successor, in hopes of overturning the impeachment resolution.
