Mt Kenya MPs No Longer Want To Impeach Deputy President
In a surprising twist, a faction of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Mt Kenya region who had previously backed a motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have now reversed their position.
MPs Geoffrey Wandeto (Tetu), Rahab Mukami (Nyeri), and Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni) announced that they would no longer pursue efforts to oust Gachagua from office.
Rahab Mukami shared her reasoning, stating, “After soul-searching and reading through the motion, I realized this is something our Deputy President and the President should resolve together because Kenya is bigger than all of us.
I have listened to the ground, and the people of Nyeri have said they do not want the Deputy President removed.”
Geoffrey Wandeto echoed her sentiments, emphasizing that the priorities of the people in the region did not align with the impeachment effort. “When we ask our people, they are saying they do not see this as a priority. They think we should be focusing on other issues. As representatives of the people, it behoves us to listen to our people and do what they have asked. So on Tuesday, I will be voting NO,” he added.
The MPs’ reversal comes just a day after their names were revealed in Parliament as among those who had initially supported the motion. These legislators, who hail from Deputy President Gachagua’s stronghold in Nyeri County, now advocate for reconciliation between the President and his Deputy.
Mukami expressed hope for a resolution, urging both leaders to mend their relationship. “Our Deputy President, please go to the President and ask for forgiveness. And for our President, please sit down with our Deputy, speak, and reach an agreement,” she said.
While support for the impeachment has wavered, other MPs from Gachagua’s political base, including Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya), and Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), remain committed to the motion. Additionally, Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki has also had a change of heart, formally retracting her support after discussions with Embu residents.
