MP Peter Salasya Beaten and Forced Out from Nyayo Stadium During Kenya-Gabon Clash
Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya was roughed up and forcibly ejected from Nyayo Stadium in chaotic scenes on Sunday, March 23, during Kenya’s crucial World Cup qualifier match against Gabon.
The outspoken MP, who was among thousands of fans present, found himself at the center of a scuffle that quickly escalated into violence. Videos captured by Kenyans.co.ke show Salasya struggling to break free as an irate crowd pushed and shoved him towards the stadium’s exit. At one point, a furious fan hurled what appeared to be a plastic container at him, while others attempted to grab him, seemingly intending to assault him further.
The altercation continued outside the stadium, where a large crowd followed Salasya, aggressively demanding that he leave the premises. Although the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, chants of “Respect the President” echoed from sections of the crowd, suggesting the attack may have been linked to remarks or actions the MP had made concerning President William Ruto.
President Ruto himself was present at Nyayo Stadium, arriving shortly after making an appearance at the World Rally Championship (WRC) event in Naivasha.
Following the incident, Salasya took to social media, appearing to downplay the attack by stating, “I didn’t want to commit blood in my hands. I had options but I chose peace.”

His dramatic eviction was one of several chaotic moments at Nyayo Stadium that evening. Earlier, security personnel were overwhelmed as frustrated fans forcefully broke down a gate to gain entry, exacerbating concerns over crowd control. Limited ticket-scanning points led to long queues, further heightening tensions before kickoff.
The event has raised serious questions about security preparedness at major sporting venues, with many calling for improved crowd management measures in future high-profile matches.
