Moi’s Grandson Freed on Sh1 Million Bond After Child Neglect Sentence Review
Collins Kibet, the grandson of former President Daniel Moi, has been released from jail after the Nakuru Court granted him a Sh1 million bond following a review of his previous sentence. The civil jail term for neglecting his children was suspended, allowing Kibet time to resolve the issues with his estranged partner.
Nakuru Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion made the ruling in what he described as a decision made in the best interest of the children. He stated that this suspension aims to provide Kibet with an opportunity to address the outstanding issues of child support. However, the magistrate made it clear that Kibet’s release comes with conditions: he must present himself in court on October 9, 2024, and show cause why he should not be re-incarcerated.
“The court order made on the 19th of September 2024 committing the judgment to the civilian is hereby reviewed and verified, subject to your availability on the 9th of October,” Magistrate Kibelion emphasized in his statement.
Kibet had been serving a seven-day sentence at Nakuru GK Prisons after being found in contempt of a court order related to a child neglect case brought forward by his estranged wife, Gladys Jeruto Tagi. She alleged that since 2021, Kibet had failed to provide financial support for their children, leading to a prolonged legal battle.
Kibet’s arrest occurred on September 18 in Ongata Rongai following a warrant issued against him. His legal representatives, Andrew Muge and George Sakimpa of Muge Law Advocates, successfully petitioned the court for a review of the jail sentence, leading to his release on bond.
As the October 9 hearing approaches, all eyes are on Kibet to see how he intends to address the child support matter that has placed him in the public spotlight.
