Meru’s New Leader: Deputy Governor to Be Sworn in as Governor
Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia is set to be sworn in as the county’s new governor on Monday, March 17, 2025.
A special gazette notice issued by the Assumption of Office committee, chaired by Martin Gitije, confirmed that the swearing-in ceremony will take place at Mwendantu Grounds starting at 8:30 am.
“It is notified for the information of the general public that the swearing-in ceremony of Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, as the Governor of Meru County, shall take place on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds, starting at 8:30 am,” the notice read in part.
As per the law, the oath-taking must be conducted in an open public space between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm and presided over by a judge. Residents and stakeholders are expected to witness the event as the county transitions to new leadership.
Transition After Impeachment
Mutuma assumes office following a High Court ruling on March 14, which upheld the Senate’s decision to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Elected as Mwangaza’s running mate in 2022, Mutuma’s tenure as deputy governor was marred by squabbles with his boss. Their relationship worsened, with Mutuma alleging exclusion from key county affairs, while Mwangaza dismissed the claims, accusing him of working against her.
