MCAs Fight, Protesters Stand Ground in Nandi County
The Nandi County Assembly turned into a battleground on Wednesday night, November 13, as chaos erupted both inside and outside the chambers. Residents staged a determined overnight vigil at the Assembly headquarters, demanding the impeachment of embattled Governor Stephen Sang over allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement.
Defying teargas and police crackdowns, the protesters sang triumphantly, accusing the governor of gross misconduct. They insisted on transparency in the impeachment proceedings, urging authorities to broadcast the debate live. “We are not leaving until justice is served,” one resolute protester declared amidst the tense standoff.
Inside the Assembly, pandemonium unfolded as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) clashed over the governor’s impeachment. Video footage revealed chaotic scenes of MCAs leaping over chairs, hurling objects, and even trading blows. The Serjeant-at-arms struggled to maintain order as the fight escalated, with MCAs scrambling for the Mace in a bid to control the proceedings.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized the police for their heavy-handed response to the protests. “The police have started rioting by throwing teargas at peaceful citizens observing the debate at Kapsabet County Assembly grounds,” he said.
He vowed to raise the matter with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, condemning the crackdown as a violation of Kenyans’ constitutional rights.
“I thank the people of Nandi County for remaining peaceful despite this unwarranted provocation. Such actions blatantly disregard Article 37 of the Constitution,” Cherargei affirmed.
Governor Sang’s tenure has been dogged by controversy and growing calls for his removal. In September, residents stormed the County Assembly, accusing him of underperformance, failing to deliver development, and hiring ghost workers. That day, a furious crowd forced MCAs to flee as tensions soared over Sang’s leadership.
With public discontent at an all-time high and divisions among local leaders deepening, the battle for Governor Sang’s political future seems far from over.
