Mbale Boys Sent Home as LaLiga Ban Triggers Rampage ;”No Football, No Peace”
Friends School Mbale in Vihiga County has been closed indefinitely following a violent student riot sparked by the administration’s refusal to allow students to watch the final day of the Spanish LaLiga matches on Sunday night.
The protest escalated into chaos, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Several students were injured during the melee, though no fatalities were reported.
Photos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke captured the scale of the unrest, revealing shattered windows, ransacked classrooms, torn books, and vandalized offices and food stores. Among the most heavily damaged was the deputy principal’s office—reportedly targeted due to the official’s alleged role in denying the students TV access to the anticipated matches.
While the school has yet to issue an official statement, Sabatia MP Clement Sloya condemned the violence in a press release, confirming that 11 students were injured in the incident.
“I wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the recent riot at Mbale Boys High School, which resulted in chaos, destruction, and injuries,” said MP Sloya.
He emphasized that such indiscipline must not be tolerated within academic institutions.
“Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning, growth, and character development—not grounds for lawlessness and unrest,” he stated, vowing that a full, independent investigation would be launched.
While disciplinary action is expected, the MP also urged for a balanced approach that includes listening to any legitimate grievances that may have triggered the riot.
MP Sloya further applauded the swift intervention by officers from Kilingili, Chavakali, and Mbale police stations, whose timely coordination managed to quell the situation before it escalated further.
The injured students were treated at Vihiga County Referral Hospital, with the MP confirming he personally covered their medical costs.
The exact motive behind the riots is yet to be officially confirmed, though multiple reports link it directly to the administration’s decision to block access to the LaLiga matches. On the same night, Barcelona capped their season with a 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice to seal their domestic treble. Real Madrid closed the season four points behind their Catalan rivals.
