Massive Traffic Snarl-Up: Drivers Stranded for Over 10 Hours on Nakuru-Nairobi Highway
The WRC Safari Rally’s immense popularity triggered a nightmarish traffic jam, leaving motorists stranded on the Nakuru-Nairobi highway for over ten hours.
Videos circulating online revealed long stretches of vehicles at a standstill, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Travelers, eager to experience the rally in Naivasha, found themselves trapped, with many forced to spend the night in their cars. Frustration mounted as social media users shared their experiences, with some noting that the return journey to Nairobi was faster than the shorter trip to Nakuru.
Despite the 78-kilometer distance to Nakuru compared to the 100-kilometer journey to Nairobi, the Nakuru-bound traffic was significantly worse. One motorist recounted a journey that extended from an expected 11 PM arrival to a grueling 3 AM finish.
The National Police Service (NPS) deployed traffic officers to manage the situation, but the sheer volume of rally attendees overwhelmed the roads. Thousands of Kenyans flocked to Naivasha, particularly over the weekend, to witness the event’s climax.
Sunday morning brought no relief, with heavy traffic reported on Moi South Lake road as spectators headed to Hells Gate for the rally’s final leg. The yearly event, while highly anticipated, consistently presents traffic challenges.
Prior to the rally, the NPS issued warnings to bus and lorry drivers against obstructing the Naivasha-Nakuru Road. They also announced collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to ensure road safety. However, the influx of rally enthusiasts proved difficult to manage.
