Mass Prison Break in Northeastern Nigeria
In a shocking turn of events, severe floods in northeastern Nigeria have led to the escape of 281 prisoners from a correctional facility in Maiduguri, Borno state.
The prison walls were brought down by the floods, which were triggered by torrential rains and the overflow of a local dam.
The Nigeria Correctional Services spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, confirmed that seven of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured, with efforts to locate the remaining fugitives still ongoing.
The floods not only affected the prison but also ravaged the surrounding area, including staff quarters, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
Maiduguri has been severely hit, with the flooding marking one of the worst natural disasters in recent memory for the region.
The disaster also wreaked havoc on a nearby zoo, washing dangerous wildlife, including crocodiles and snakes, into local communities, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
The floods have claimed the lives of at least 30 people, and nearly one million residents have been affected, forcing hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in displacement camps.
As recovery operations continue, authorities are racing against time to recapture the remaining escapees and restore order in the flood-stricken region.
