Martha Karua Decries Abductions, Calls Out Govt on Boniface Mwangi’s Kidnapping
Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua has strongly condemned the recent abduction of prominent activist Boniface Mwangi, who was forcefully taken from his Lukenya home in Machakos County early Sunday morning on October 27. Karua criticized the government’s silence and questioned police conduct, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in such operations.
“The abductors failed to identify themselves, nor did they disclose their intentions or destination for Mwangi,” Karua stated during a press briefing. She voiced concerns over the pattern of extrajudicial actions allegedly carried out by police forces, which she noted are meant to protect the citizens rather than instill fear and insecurity.
“These kidnappings, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings—largely targeting innocent Kenyan youth—have become a signature of the current regime’s tactics. This trend must cease immediately,” she declared, urging an end to what she called a systemic crackdown on freedom of speech and dissent.
Karua further criticized President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of allegedly creating unlawful squads to execute these abductions and suppress dissenting voices. “A government that forms squads outside legal parameters to terrorize and harm its people forfeits its moral right to govern,” she argued, calling for the dissolution of these teams and highlighting the illegality of such actions under both Kenyan and international law.
The NARC-Kenya leader emphasized that the Constitution’s guarantees of life and liberty are non-negotiable and implored Kenyans to recognize their right to resist arbitrary arrests and unlawful detentions. “Targeting activists, journalists, and youth is an assault on justice, equality, and the very freedoms enshrined in our Constitution,” Karua asserted, demanding that the administration take immediate responsibility for the safety of Boniface Mwangi and address the issue of widespread disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
She also appealed to international bodies such as the African Union and the United Nations for oversight, calling for an impartial investigation into these abductions and holding accountable those responsible for any human rights abuses.
“Despite attempts to intimidate Kenyans into submission, our people are resilient and possess an undeniable right to defend their fundamental rights to life, liberty, and dignity,” Karua said, urging citizens to oppose oppression and advocate for justice.
