Man Utd’s Goal Extends as Villa Hold Them to 0-0 Draw
Manchester United’s frustrating winless run extended to five games after a goalless draw at Aston Villa on Sunday, piling even more pressure on under-fire manager Erik ten Hag. Despite Bruno Fernandes coming closest to breaking the deadlock with a second-half free-kick that rattled the crossbar, United failed to score for the third straight Premier League match.
The point leaves United languishing in 14th place, with only two wins from their opening seven games of the season. Meanwhile, fifth-placed Villa missed the opportunity to break into the top four, unable to repeat their midweek Champions League heroics after defeating Bayern Munich.
Last weekend’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham had already raised concerns over Ten Hag’s future, and Thursday’s 3-3 Europa League draw against Porto, where United surrendered a two-goal lead, did little to ease the scrutiny. Defensive changes were made for the Villa clash, with Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans starting after the Porto disappointment.
Marcus Rashford, United’s biggest attacking threat, tested Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez early in the match but was substituted in the second half after narrowly avoiding a red card. Fernandes came closest for the visitors, but his free-kick was denied by the woodwork.
Injuries forced further reshuffling in the United defense, while Villa manager Unai Emery introduced Jhon Duran in an attempt to turn the game in his side’s favor. Villa had a late chance to snatch the win, but a deflected shot from Jaden Philogene ensured both sides shared the spoils.
The draw continues Manchester United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1989, and with a two-week international break looming, the pressure is mounting on Ten Hag. Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe was seen in the stands, with the club’s hierarchy now faced with the decision of whether to back their manager or seek change before it’s too late.
