Leader Rushed to Hospital During Global Summit
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was admitted to a Rio de Janeiro hospital on Monday after experiencing a health scare while attending the G20 summit. Officials confirmed his condition is stable following diagnostic tests.
In an official statement, Paraguayan authorities reported, “We inform that the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, was treated today at the Samaritano Hospital (Botafogo) in Rio de Janeiro due to an indisposition.”
The 46-year-old leader reportedly fell ill during the summit, prompting immediate medical attention. Witnesses stated that he was transported from the summit venue by ambulance. According to a medical bulletin, Peña experienced a brief “malaise in the afternoon” but has since stabilized. “The head of state is doing well, and his current state of health is stable,” the hospital noted.
Vice President Pedro Alliana provided further reassurance through a statement on social media platform X: “I spoke with President Peña, who is in Rio de Janeiro’s Samaritano Hospital after a slight illness. He is doing well and awaiting the results of medical tests.”
Reports in some Latin American outlets suggested that Peña had suffered chest pains, though no official confirmation has been made.
Paraguay is not a G20 member, but Peña was among the non-member leaders invited to the summit by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Before his illness, Peña had been actively engaging with other leaders, presenting Paraguay’s economic achievements, particularly in reducing poverty.
