“Kufa Dereva, Kufa Makanga!” Kenyans Rally for Joint Resignation of Ruto and Gachagua
The nationwide public participation exercise regarding the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua began on Friday with a wave of protests, as some Kenyans also demanded President William Ruto’s resignation. Demonstrations erupted in Nyeri and Nairobi, with citizens calling for a complete overhaul of the current leadership.
In Nyeri, residents marched out of the discussion venue, accusing officials of bribing them to back the motion. Demonstrators set up barricades, lit bonfires, and chanted “No Rigathi, No Government.” A resident voiced the community’s frustration, saying, “Hatutaki hiyo mia tano… tunajua kujitaftia… No Rigathi, no government.”
Similar sentiments were echoed in Nairobi, where participants gathered at Bomas of Kenya. Chants of “Kufa dereva, kufa makanga” reverberated as demonstrators demanded that President Ruto should step down alongside Gachagua. The phrase implies that the President and Deputy President, having been elected together, should leave office together if one is removed.
“Tumechoka kuambiwa fulani ni mbaya na fulani ni mzuri,” said a resident of Starehe. “Embe moja ikioza kwa kikapu, yote yameoza. Nasema kufa dereva, kufa makanga.”
The escalating dissatisfaction reflects a growing discontent among Kenyans towards the current administration. In the impeachment motion filed by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accusations against Gachagua include gross misconduct, constitutional violations, and corruption. The motion, currently undergoing public participation, will soon return to the National Assembly for debate.
Many Kenyans are calling for a new beginning, with some advocating for the dissolution of the government. “For the sake of peace and tranquility in the country, this government must go home. We are ready to bring a new revolution and elect new leaders,” declared a protester, underscoring the unrest gripping the nation.
