Kitengela Abductions Demands Acting IG’s Appearance In High Court
The High Court has issued a decisive order requiring the Acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, to appear in court at 3 pm on Tuesday. This order is in direct response to the alarming disappearance of two siblings, Jamil and Aslay Longton, along with activist Bob Njagi, in Kitengela Town two weeks ago. The three were reportedly abducted by individuals believed to be police officers on August 19, 2024.
The abduction of Njagi occurred in broad daylight while he was traveling on a Kitengela-bound matatu. Eyewitnesses reported that three hooded men intercepted the vehicle, forcibly removed him, and drove off in an unmarked car. The incident has since drawn widespread concern and condemnation.
A lobby group swiftly moved to court, demanding the immediate release or presentation of the missing individuals. The High Court, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, had previously ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service (NPS) to disclose the victims’ whereabouts by August 26, 2024. However, this directive was met with silence from the authorities, prompting the latest court order compelling the Acting IG to personally account for the missing individuals.
The victims’ families have expressed their anguish, appealing directly to President William Ruto to honor his pre-election promise that no one would be abducted or assassinated under his rule. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has also entered the fray, issuing a stern warning to the security agencies to release the victims or face legal action.
As the 3 pm deadline looms, all eyes are on the Acting IG and the police service, with the nation awaiting their response in what has become a significant test of accountability for the country’s security forces.
