Kisumu Safari Train Rides Return: A Scenic Night Journey Awaits Travelers
Kenya Railways has officially announced the return of its Kisumu Safari Train services, resuming operations on Friday, December 6. The popular service, halted weeks ago for rehabilitation, promises a seamless and scenic travel experience for passengers traveling between Nairobi and Kisumu.
Travelers embarking on this overnight adventure will board three trains in succession. The journey begins at Nairobi Central Station at 4:00 p.m. every Friday, with the train arriving at Kisumu Station at 6:30 a.m. the following Saturday. Return trips from Kisumu will occur on Sundays, mirroring the same schedule.
The journey is affordably priced, with economy class tickets available for Ksh900 and first-class tickets priced at Ksh2,400. Passengers can also enjoy the convenience of modern amenities aboard the train.
Route Highlights
The trip kicks off at Nairobi Central Railway Station, followed by a stop at Nairobi Terminus around 5:20 p.m. Here, passengers will board the Madaraka Express Train to Mai Mahiu. Upon reaching Mai Mahiu Station at 6:55 p.m., travelers will transfer to an MGR train for the overnight segment, ultimately arriving in Kisumu early Saturday morning.
In adherence to travel regulations, Kenya Railways has stated that cargo exceeding 1.6 meters in width and 2 meters in length will not be allowed on board. Additionally, passengers are advised to arrive at least an hour before departure for verification procedures.
Resumption After Rehabilitation
The train services were initially suspended on November 25 due to heavy rains and flooding that damaged sections of the railway. Kenya Railways has since completed the rehabilitation, ensuring safe and efficient travel.
The Kisumu Safari Train has a history of interruptions. It was reinstated on December 17, 2021, after being out of service for over a decade due to deteriorating railway infrastructure. Now, the train offers an affordable and picturesque option for travelers seeking a unique connection between Nairobi and Kisumu.
Quoted Statement
“This service has always been a favorite for passengers due to its affordability and the breathtaking views along the route,” Kenya Railways highlighted in their announcement.
