Kidnapped Missionaries: High-Stakes Rescue Operation Led by Acting IG in Moyale

Moyale, Marsabit County – The atmosphere in Moyale is fraught with tension as security agencies intensify efforts to secure the release of two South Korean missionaries abducted in a daring attack on August 12. The victims, David Lee and his mother-in-law Hiwi Sokk Cheon, were kidnapped by armed men at Odda Mission Secondary School, where they were involved in community service. Their abduction, amidst escalating violence in the region, has shaken the local population.

In response, a swift multi-agency operation has resulted in the arrest of eight suspects, including six Ethiopians. The suspects were brought before the Moyale Principal Magistrate’s Court and remanded for ten days to facilitate ongoing investigations. The operation is being spearheaded by the National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and DCI Director Mohamed Amin have personally taken charge, visiting Moyale to lead rescue operations and engage with local security forces and residents. Their involvement underscores the gravity of the situation, as the abduction coincided with a brutal attack in the region that left eight people dead and a lorry transporting food supplies from Nairobi to Dukana torched.

Marsabit Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali and other regional leaders have strongly condemned the violence, urging the national government to address the growing security crisis along the Kenya-Ethiopia border. The governor expressed alarm over the frequent killings, kidnappings, and property destruction, urging immediate government intervention to prevent further bloodshed.

The security situation in Moyale remains precarious, with reports indicating that the attackers may have crossed from Ethiopia, raising concerns over the involvement of foreign militias in destabilizing the area. On August 1, a police checkpoint in Moyale town was also attacked, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to three others.

As security forces continue their operations, the people of Moyale remain on edge, hoping for the safe return of the kidnapped missionaries and an end to the violence plaguing their community.
