Kenyans Caught in Trafficking Web, Embassy in Bangkok Issues Dire Warning
The Kenya Embassy in Bangkok has issued a stern warning over a disturbing surge in Kenyans being lured into fake job opportunities in Thailand, only to be trafficked into Myanmar. The Embassy’s recent statement highlights a growing human trafficking network that not only exploits these victims but also coerces them into becoming part of the criminal operation.
Roseline Njogu, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, revealed that Kenya’s Ambassador to Thailand, Lindsay Kiptiness Kimwole, has received threats from traffickers demanding hefty ransoms for the release of trapped Kenyans.
The traffickers, some of whom are Kenyans, prey on educated professionals with false promises of employment, only to force them into illicit activities once they arrive in Thailand.
The Embassy has already rescued over 140 Kenyans and other Africans since 2022, but the crisis shows no sign of abating. Survivors recount harrowing tales of torture and deprivation under the traffickers’ control. Additionally, the Embassy is now investigating the tragic death of a Kenyan woman in Bangkok, reportedly linked to organ harvesting.
The Kenyan government has renewed its call for caution, urging citizens to verify job offers abroad with the Embassy to avoid falling into the traffickers’ traps.
