Kenyan Marathoner Win Global Marathon Triumph in Beijing
Kenya’s Vicoty Chepng’eno celebrated a major victory on Sunday morning, capturing first place at the 2024 Beijing Marathon in China. Running through the challenging, smog-laden streets of Beijing, the 30-year-old marathoner clocked in at an impressive 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 56 seconds for the 42-kilometer race.
Chepng’eno’s strong start and determined pace allowed her to maintain a significant lead throughout, securing yet another accolade for Kenya’s renowned distance-running reputation.
In a competitive women’s field, Chepng’eno was trailed by Ethiopia’s Rahma Tusa, who finished in 2:24:31, while Kenya’s Angela Jemesunde Tanui claimed the third spot with a time of 2:25:41.
The men’s race also saw intense competition, with Ethiopia’s Lemi Berhanu Hayle narrowly edging out Kenya’s Bethwel Kibet Chumba. Berhanu won with a time of 2:09:16, just 14 seconds ahead of Chumba’s 2:09:30. China’s Chen Tianyu rounded out the podium in third, completing the race in 2:09:48.
Chepng’eno’s latest win is another highlight in her illustrious career, adding to her earlier successes this year. In January, she finished second at the Chevron Houston Marathon in the United States with a remarkable 2:19:55, while last year, she secured second place in Spain’s 10K FASCA Castello race with a personal best of 30:14. The seasoned athlete also achieved victory in the 2022 Aramco Houston Marathon, where she clocked under 2:19:55.
This triumph marks yet another milestone for Kenyan athletes, who have dominated major international races in recent months. Just a few weeks ago, Ruth Chepngetich set a new world record in Chicago, becoming the first woman to complete a marathon under the 2:10 mark with a time of 2:09:57. On the men’s side, John Korir made headlines with a personal best of 2:02:43 in the same Chicago Marathon, capturing his first World Marathon Major title.
Kenyan runners continue to uphold their nation’s legacy in marathon history, standing out as the athletes to beat on the global stage.
