Kenya Engages Korea on Rescue of Abducted Nationals, Mudavadi Confirms
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has provided a crucial update on the ongoing investigation into the abduction of two South Korean nationals in Moyale.
In a statement released on Monday, August 19, 2024, Mudavadi expressed Kenya’s deep concern over the incident, which has strained the otherwise strong ties between Kenya and the Republic of Korea.
The update follows a telephone discussion on August 16, 2024, between Mudavadi and Choe Tae-Yul, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Korea. During the call, Mudavadi conveyed the Kenyan government’s regret over the kidnapping of Cheon Hwisook and Lee In on August 12, 2024.
He assured that the Kenyan security apparatus, led by the acting Inspector General of Police and the National Intelligence Service, is conducting an extensive and urgent operation to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.
In his statement, Mudavadi emphasized the seriousness with which the Kenyan authorities are treating the situation. He reassured that the matter has been prioritized at the highest levels of security and intelligence services, who are closely monitoring developments on the ground in Moyale.
“While aware of the gravity of the situation, the Prime CS stated that Kenyan security authorities are actively engaged in an extensive search operation with utmost urgency and dedication to secure the safe return of the individuals. The matter has been seized by the acting Inspector General of Police and the National Intelligence Service who have indeed visited the place,” the statement read.
Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of foreign nationals within its borders, noting that the situation is being handled with the highest level of seriousness and cooperation with international partners. He also took the opportunity to highlight the strengthening ties between Kenya and Korea, with plans for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York already in place.
Minister Choe Tae-Yul, in response, echoed the need for continued bilateral engagement and reassured Kenya of Korea’s willingness to collaborate on matters of mutual concern.
