Mathew Nyamlori, a man celebrated for his unmatched resilience after sitting the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations nine times, has passed away.
Nyamlori’s death was confirmed on Monday, January 20, by his close friend Okoto Nyuka BeL, who revealed that the determined scholar succumbed to gastric cancer after a brave fight.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend, Mathew Nyamlori, who bravely battled cancer with unwavering strength. He rested peacefully this morning at 7:00 am, while we were processing his discharge, leaving behind a legacy of courage and hope. While our hearts ache with the loss, we thank God for the time we shared with him and the inspiration he gave us. Rest well, Mathew. You fought the good fight,” the friend wrote in a heartfelt social media post.
Okoto further shared details of Nyamlori’s final moments, revealing that the late scholar had accepted his fate and even made personal arrangements in preparation. “As his caregivers, his brother and I spent the night by his side, just as he had asked. He requested his wallet, carefully rearranged the cards in it, and then asked for his phone,” he added.
Nyamlori’s remarkable story gained nationwide attention for his determination to secure a scholarship, which drove him to re-sit the KCPE exams repeatedly, beginning in the late 1990s. His journey was not without challenges, as financial difficulties forced him to juggle between work and studies. At one point, he worked as a casual laborer at a milling factory.
His persistence paid off in his ninth attempt, earning him a scholarship and admission to Nairobi School. Nyamlori later joined Kenyatta University in 2021, where he pursued a degree in Public Administration and Policy. However, his health began to decline during his university years.
Nyamlori’s journey remains a testament to resilience and determination, inspiring countless Kenyans to pursue their dreams against all odds. His passing leaves behind a legacy of hope and an enduring example of the power of persistence.
May he rest in eternal peace.
