Kalonzo Urges Youth to Lead Opposition Against Ruto’s Reign
Embu, Kenya – August 18, 2024 – Azimio la Umoja coalition leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Generation Z to come together in opposition to President William Ruto’s newly reconstituted broad-based government.
Speaking during a press conference in Embu town, Kalonzo emphasized that the youth are the de facto opposition leaders and must stand against the administration’s plans, including the potential reintroduction of previously defeated bills in Parliament.
Kalonzo highlighted the administration’s intention to introduce road tolls, advising, “If you want to introduce road tolls, please go and build your own roads; not the ones that Kibaki and Uhuru built.” He warned that the government, bolstered by its newfound parliamentary majority, may push through these and other controversial measures.
Eugene Wamalwa, DAP-K party leader, echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments, expressing concern that the reconstituted government could be even more problematic than its predecessor, as it now includes former opposition leaders. He noted, “With the numbers that have been garnered now by the broad-based nusu-mkate government, these taxes will go through parliament.
Wamalwa also encouraged a fresh approach from the youth, promoting a “Gen Zote” strategy that encompasses everyone. Kalonzo, standing alongside Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and Wamalwa, reaffirmed their commitment to remaining outside the government, serving as a robust alternative to keep the Kenya Kwanza administration in check.
Kalonzo criticized ODM’s decision to join the government, accusing them of betraying the youth who sacrificed for a better future. He also warned of looming tax increases, higher electricity costs, and new road tolls, urging the Judiciary to protect the Kenyan people from state overreach.
The Wiper Party leader further blamed the government for the chaos in the education sector, specifically regarding the confusion over the new higher education funding model. He pointed to President Ruto’s recent revocation of university admission letters as a prime example of the administration’s failure to manage the sector effectively.
Kalonzo concluded by assuring the public, “Without a strong opposition, there will be a dictatorship. We will not join the Ruto government and we will remain loyal to the people.”
