Kalonzo Outlines Demands for Dialogue with Ruto
Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper party, has established specific conditions for any potential discussions with President William Ruto’s administration. He stated these conditions during a speech at the Gospel Outreach Church in Nairobi.
Kalonzo made it clear that he will not join the government or enter into any formal cooperation agreements, unlike some other opposition figures. He emphasized that his only reason for meeting with the President would be to discuss the selection of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) leadership.
“I do not mind if we meet and discuss who will be the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Someone who will not be used in a bad way, then we can meet,” Kalonzo asserted. He hopes to win the 2027 presidential election, and he believes his next meeting with Ruto should be the handover of power.
“That is the only thing we can meet and discuss, beyond that we will have to meet at the ballot in 2027. The way they met with Uhuru during the handing over after the 2022 elections, that is the only way we will meet with him,” he explained.
Furthermore, Kalonzo criticized the notion of collaborating with the President while many unemployed graduates are struggling and the government is failing to create adequate job opportunities. He also pointed out the severe economic challenges that have caused businesses to close and companies to leave Kenya, leaving many people jobless. He accused the government of ignoring these issues.
“Without bringing back the 24-hour economy, the factories that have since relocated to the neighbouring country of Tanzania and Uganda will have nothing to do with them,” Kalonzo stated.
He also brought up the issue of making June 25 a public holiday, saying that if the current government doesn’t do it, he will ensure it becomes a public holiday if he is elected President in 2027.
Following the agreement between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kalonzo stands as the sole prominent opposition voice. Government allies have urged him to join the agreement, but he has remained firm, insisting that he will not join unless it benefits all Kenyans.
“If there is no formula at the KICC showing how Kenyans are going to compensate their families and the loss of lives due to police brutality, then there is nothing that will come out of KICC other than betrayal,” Kalonzo declared during a speech at the People’s Dialogue Festival in Nairobi on Friday, March 7.
