Kalonzo Condemns Ruto’s Government, Urges U.S. Action on Wanjigi Raid
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the United States to step in and address the alleged harassment of businessman Jimi Wanjigi and the broader issue of abductions and extrajudicial killings under President William Ruto’s administration.
During a burial ceremony in Mwingi West on Friday, Kalonzo strongly criticized the government for criminalizing demonstrations led by the youth, which have persisted for the last two months. He emphasized that Wanjigi, who has been targeted multiple times, is being unjustly harassed by state forces.
“Jimi has been harassed in this country; this time, even the US Under Secretary is still in the country. She should appeal to Kenya Kwanza to stop disturbing him because he has done the right thing and gone to court,” Kalonzo stated. “They seem determined to arrest him without a court order, raiding his house, destroying CCTV, and planting teargas and other incriminating items.”
Kalonzo further called on the church to pray for Kenya, particularly in light of ongoing corruption, while applauding the youth for their persistent fight against what he described as oppressive leadership. He urged unity, expressing hope that a brighter future is on the horizon.
“You can’t criminalize peaceful demos where young people are holding our flags. I want to urge the church to pray earnestly for this land without ceasing so that the revolution continues. We need to be proud of the Gen Zs because they don’t want their country to be messed up,” he added.
Joining him in his appeal, DAP-Kenya party counterpart Eugene Wamalwa highlighted the alarming number of extrajudicial killings in the country, with over 200 lives lost, predominantly among the youth. He reiterated the constitutional right to demonstrate, emphasizing that these rights should be protected, not violated.
Wamalwa also suggested that the possible departure of ODM leader Raila Odinga from the opposition coalition might be a hidden opportunity for positive change.
The comments came after police raided Jimi Wanjigi’s Muthaiga home on Thursday, accusing him of funding the recent Nane Nane protests. Although police were ordered to arrest him, Wanjigi secured a court order preventing his detention.
