Jesus Won’t Return to Earth”: Survivor Testifies Against Mackenzie’s Deadly Teachings
MOMBASA – A harrowing testimony unfolded in a Mombasa court as a witness recounted the extreme teachings of Paul Mackenzie, the suspected mastermind behind the Shakahola massacre.
According to the witness, Mackenzie told his followers that Jesus had revealed He would no longer return to earth but instead would meet them in heaven, urging them to fast to death to attain salvation.
The testimony came from a minor, under the protection of the Witness Protection Agency, who detailed how Mackenzie’s chilling directive led to widespread starvation, including the death of children.
The witness, bitterly reflecting on his own family’s involvement, revealed that his mother, a devout follower of Mackenzie, forced him and his younger brother to abandon their education in Mshomoroni, Mombasa County, to join the religious group in the desolate Shakahola forest.
According to the witness, the indoctrination began in October 2020, when his mother secretly led her two sons to Shakahola while their father, a matatu driver, was away. At Mackenzie’s church, they were forced into a life of fasting, where children, especially those under six, perished from starvation. Tragically, the witness’s 10-year-old brother was among the victims.
The ordeal worsened when the witness attempted to escape, only to be caught by Mackenzie’s operatives and returned to face the same fate. It was only after his mother’s mysterious death and a police rescue that he was saved.
In another gut-wrenching testimony, a Muslim minor detailed his own experience of being led to Mackenzie’s church after falling ill. His family, believing Mackenzie’s prayers had healed him, enrolled him and his sister in the preacher’s biblical studies.
Both siblings dropped out of school, but despite their eventual rescue by law enforcement, their mother remained committed to Mackenzie’s teachings until she disappeared in 2023.
Mackenzie, along with 95 co-accused, faces multiple charges, including terrorism, child cruelty, murder, and radicalization, for his role in orchestrating one of Kenya’s most shocking cult-related tragedies.
