Jamaican Star Konshens Champions Kenya at Summerjam Festival

At the height of the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations, celebrities from Nigeria, Jamaica, Tanzania, and beyond have voiced their support. Notable figures like Joeboy and Jamaica’s Queen Ifrica have made their solidarity clear, with some, such as Christina Shusho, even changing their profile pictures to the Kenyan flag.

On Saturday, this support was unmistakable at the Germany Summerjam Festival, where Jamaican dancehall sensation Konshens performed while proudly waving the Kenyan flag. As he belted out his hit “Gyal a Bubble,” Konshens’ tribute to Kenya was evident, with the crowd joining in by waving Kenyan flags and responding with thunderous applause.

“Kenya we see uno! (You!)… We have the flag for all the people! Buss a blank!” Konshens exclaimed, stirring the crowd into a frenzy.

This show of solidarity came just a day before the Shujaaz Concert at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, which honored the lives lost during the anti-government protests over the past three weeks. On Sunday, July 7th, known as ‘SabaSaba’ Day, thousands of Kenyans gathered at Uhuru Park, each bearing a Kenyan flag to pay tribute to the over 40 individuals who were killed in the protests.

The concert featured some of Kenya’s top musical talent, including Khaligraph Jones, Nameless, Octopizzo, and Juliani. The crowd was particularly moved by Eric Wainaina’s “Daima,” singing along with clenched fists raised in the air, a poignant tribute to the fallen.
