“It Is Well”: DP Gachagua’s Defiant Response After Impeachment Vote in Parliament
Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following a Tuesday evening vote in Parliament that moved to impeach him. Taking to social media, Gachagua posted a series of Bible verses, suggesting a tone of resilience and faith amidst the political storm.
His first post was from 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” In a subsequent post, he shared a verse from Jeremiah 30:19, stating: “From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing.
I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.” He concluded his posts with the simple yet powerful message: “It is well.”
The Deputy President now heads to the Senate, where he will defend himself against an impeachment motion supported by 282 MPs, while only 44 legislators voted against it, and one abstained. The motion, tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, lists 11 charges, including gross violations of the Constitution, undermining both the President and Cabinet, and compromising judicial independence.
Other accusations range from making inflammatory statements, committing economic crimes, spreading divisive remarks, to publicly challenging the President and consistently bullying public officers.
Gachagua, who defended himself for two hours before Parliament, dismissed the charges as politically motivated and lacking in merit, further fueling speculation about the internal rift within the government. The Senate’s decision will determine whether the Deputy President remains in office or faces removal, as tensions rise across the political landscape.
