Israeli Airstrikes Claim 37 Lives, Including Women and Children
In an escalation of violence, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 37 people in Gaza on Tuesday, Palestinian medics reported, as the conflict with the Islamist militant group Hamas continues to rage. The strikes targeted what the Israeli military identified as Hamas command centers.
Palestinian health officials detailed that 13 people, including women and children, were killed in two airstrikes on homes in Nuseirat, one of Gaza’s historic refugee camps. A separate strike targeted a school in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City, where displaced Palestinian families were taking shelter, killing at least seven people.
The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted Hamas militants using a command center within a compound that had previously housed the Al-Shejaia School, while also accusing Hamas of exploiting civilian facilities for military purposes—an allegation that Hamas has consistently denied.
In other reported attacks, five Palestinians lost their lives in Rafah and the Zeitoun suburb of Gaza City, while six more were killed in a strike on a tent sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis. Hours later, another airstrike targeted a car in western Khan Younis, killing six more. The aftermath footage showed the vehicle reduced to a mangled, burnt-out wreck.
Simultaneously, the armed wings of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other militant factions launched counterattacks against Israeli forces, utilizing anti-tank rockets, mortar fire, and explosive devices, heightening the already intense situation.
The surge in violence coincides with an Israeli ground operation in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah militants, further complicating an already volatile regional situation. This incursion represents an escalation in the Middle East conflict, drawing in Iran-backed forces and raising concerns of broader international involvement.
As tensions escalate, the conflict has left a staggering toll on Gaza’s population, displacing over 2.3 million residents and resulting in over 41,600 deaths according to Gaza health authorities. While Israeli forces focus on their operations in Lebanon, Palestinians in Gaza fear the violence could be prolonged.
