Iran Fires 200 Missiles; Israel Vows Retaliation Including Hypersonics
Iran has announced the launch of 200 missiles against Israel, marking the first time the nation has reportedly used hypersonic weapons in conflict, according to state television reports on Wednesday.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for targeting “three military bases” around Tel Aviv and other bases, showcasing a significant escalation in regional tensions.
Footage circulated by Iranian media appears to show missiles being fired, with the IRGC stating that “90 percent” of the missiles successfully “hit their targets” late Tuesday.
The Israeli military countered this claim, asserting that around 180 missiles had been launched into its territory, with the majority being intercepted by Israel’s advanced defense systems.
Iran has recently developed an intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of traveling at hypersonic speeds, reaching up to 15 times the speed of sound.
This capability, first unveiled in June 2023, was hailed by then-president Ebrahim Raisi as a significant enhancement of Iran’s “power of deterrence,” intended to “bring peace and stability to the countries of the region.”
Hypersonic missiles, unlike conventional ballistic ones, fly at low altitudes within the atmosphere, making them harder to detect and intercept, posing a unique threat to modern air defense systems.
Reacting to the strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Iran had made a “big mistake” in launching the attack. The missile barrage follows a week of heightened tensions after Israel targeted and killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
The United States, meanwhile, has indicated that it is discussing a joint response with Israel, while Iran’s chief of staff has warned that Tehran will target Israeli infrastructure if its territory is attacked in retaliation.
