Investigators Suspend Arrest of Former President After Standoff
Investigators in South Korea have halted an attempt to arrest ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol following a dramatic six-hour standoff with his security team at his residence.
The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which has been probing Yoon over his controversial martial law declaration, confirmed the suspension late Thursday.
“We’ve determined that the arrest is impossible,” the CIO announced, expressing regret over Yoon’s “refusal of the legal process.”
The announcement sparked celebrations among Yoon’s loyal supporters, who had been camping outside his home in anticipation. “We won,” they chanted, singing and dancing after the decision was made public.
Authorities now face a deadline of 6 January to execute the arrest warrant. Should they fail, investigators have the option to seek a new warrant to renew their efforts.
