Ibrahim Mwiti Was Victim of Hit-and-Run, Not Abduction
The National Police Service (NPS) has released a detailed account of the death of 24-year-old Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, whose disappearance in November 2024 sparked widespread concern and online speculation.
Mwiti, who was last seen in Nairobi city center on November 11, went missing under unclear circumstances, leading his family and friends to report his absence and appeal for information on social media. Initial posts alleged that Mwiti had been abducted.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the NPS clarified that Mwiti died in a hit-and-run accident along Thika Road in the early hours of November 12, 2024. Investigations conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that Mwiti was fatally struck by an unknown vehicle while riding a hired motorcycle (Registration No. KMFG 807C) near Spur Mall.
“On November 11, 2024, Mwiti was last seen alive and reported missing by his mother at Kamukunji Police Station on November 15 and later at Juja Police Station on November 18,” read the statement.
Police explained that Mwiti’s body, which bore visible head injuries, was discovered shortly after the accident by Juja Traffic Police. Without identification documents at the scene, the body was transported to General Kago Hospital Mortuary as unidentified. Fingerprints submitted to the National Registration Bureau eventually confirmed Mwiti’s identity on November 21, 2024.
According to the NPS, Mwiti’s mother opted for a religious burial process, waiving a postmortem examination through an affidavit sworn before the Thika Law Courts. Mwiti’s body was subsequently released and buried at Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery on January 3, 2025.
In her formal statement recorded with the DCI on January 4, Mwiti’s mother stated that her son was not an activist, contradicting earlier claims on social media.
“The National Police Service urges media and the public to avoid spreading unverified or misleading information that could incite public sentiment,” the statement concluded.
Mwiti, who earned his living as a delivery worker, tragically lost his life far from home, approximately 45 kilometers from where he was last seen.
