“I Will Fight to the End” ;Gachagua Fires Back at Resignation Calls
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has categorically dismissed calls for his resignation amid an ongoing impeachment motion spearheaded by Kibwezi West MP, Mwengi Mutuse.
The motion accuses Gachagua of multiple infractions, including gross misconduct, undermining President William Ruto, and interfering with the Nairobi County leadership.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday night, Gachagua termed those urging him to step down as “jokers,” asserting that his election by 7.2 million Kenyans makes resignation without public consent out of the question.
“I have no intention of resigning from this job… I will fight until the end,” Gachagua vowed. He also defended his loyalty to President Ruto and maintained that he had done nothing wrong to warrant stepping down.
Defending His Wealth
Gachagua further addressed allegations surrounding his wealth, denying claims that he illegally amassed property through his spouse, children, and close family members. He emphasized that his business ventures long preceded his political career, and the accusations of using 22 companies to launder money were baseless.
“My life didn’t start as Deputy President,” Gachagua remarked, recounting his successful business ventures during former President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure, when the economy was thriving.
He also clarified that none of his children’s companies engage in government business, challenging anyone to provide evidence of such deals. Gachagua labeled Mutuse’s accusations as “sensational” and devoid of truth.
A Plea for Forgiveness, Not Admission
In response to his plea for forgiveness made during a church service on Sunday, Gachagua clarified that the appeal was not an admission of guilt. He explained that his request for pardon from President Ruto and others was a gesture of humility, not a concession to the allegations against him.
“The apology yesterday is in no way an admission of these ridiculous allegations meant to overturn the people’s will,” Gachagua said.
He expressed readiness to defend himself before Parliament, where he intends to prove his innocence against all the charges brought forward.
