“I Was Impeached for Standing Up to Oppression”: Rigathi Gachagua Speaks Out
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shed light on the reasons behind his recent impeachment, attributing it to his stance against government actions he described as oppressive to ordinary Kenyans. Gachagua, who was impeached after senators upheld five charges against him, including gross misconduct, has spoken openly about what he views as the true motives behind his removal.
Speaking to a crowd in Kawaha West on Sunday, November 10, Gachagua said he believed he was impeached because he took a firm stand against the Kenya Kwanza government’s handling of evictions, a position he felt was necessary to protect vulnerable citizens. “They impeached me because I stood against the oppression of Kenyans,” he stated. “If that was my mistake, I accept it. We had promised Kenyans that no one would face forced eviction without fair compensation. Today, I am glad the courts recently ruled that evicted Kenyans must be compensated, showing they agree with me.”
The former deputy president highlighted that one of the key charges leading to his impeachment involved his vocal opposition to demolitions of homes in informal settlements. He noted that he had consistently pushed for fair treatment of residents and had opposed any forced removals unless proper compensation was provided.
In his remarks, Gachagua commended the judiciary, particularly Justice Ann Mogeni, for a recent ruling ordering the government to compensate displaced residents of Mathare, Gwa Kairu, Mukuru Kwa Ruben, and Kiamaiko. “I saw the courts ruled those people whose houses were demolished to be paid, which means I was vindicated and won,” he said, expressing satisfaction that the ruling aligned with his stance and justified his actions.
Through his comments, Gachagua underscored his enduring commitment to defending the rights of Kenyans, regardless of political consequences, framing his impeachment as the result of a principled stand on behalf of the people.
