Husband of Russian Billionaire Detained Following Violent Office Seizure
In a dramatic turn of events, Vladislav Bakalchuk, the estranged husband of Russia’s wealthiest woman, Tatyana Bakalchuk, has been arrested and charged with murder following a violent shootout at the Moscow office of Wildberries, the country’s largest online retailer. The deadly incident, which took place just blocks from the Kremlin, left two people dead and seven others wounded, including police officers.
The shooting reportedly erupted amidst escalating tensions over a high-stakes business dispute between Vladislav and Tatyana, who are in the midst of a bitter divorce. The conflict centers on the recent merger between Wildberries and outdoor advertising giant Russ Group, which led to the formation of a new entity, RVB, and significantly reduced Tatyana’s control over the company she founded in 2004.
According to Vladislav, he arrived at the Wildberries office for a scheduled meeting, but was met with gunfire from the staff. Tatyana, however, claims her estranged husband attempted to forcibly seize control of the office and that no meeting had been arranged. Both parties have accused each other of sparking the violence, which has drawn parallels to Russia’s chaotic corporate turf wars of the 1990s.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has sided with Vladislav, labeling the merger an “asset grab” and questioning the legality of the deal, while Tatyana has dismissed such claims. Despite the Kremlin’s support of the merger, President Vladimir Putin has distanced himself from the matter, indicating that he will not intervene.
As Vladislav faces charges of murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Tatyana posted an emotional video on Telegram, pleading with her husband: “What are you doing, Vladislav? How will you look into the eyes of your parents and our children? How could you bring the situation to such absurdity?”
The shocking incident has captivated Russia, with many seeing it as a throwback to a darker era in the country’s business world, where violent clashes over corporate control were all too common.
