Huldah Becomes First Kenyan-American Legislator in Minnesota
Kenyan-American Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley has made history in Minnesota by winning a seat in the state’s House of Representatives. Running as a Democrat, Momanyi triumphed over her Republican opponent, Brad Olson, to claim the seat for House District 38A. Her victory was resounding, securing 65% of the vote, while Olson managed 35%, in a race many expected to be closely fought.
Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke captured the jubilant atmosphere at a watch party in Brooklyn Park, where her supporters eagerly tracked results late into Tuesday night. The scene underscored the significance of her victory, especially within the district’s diverse demographic makeup.\
Census data reveals that District 38A is composed of over 30% Black residents, with Asian and Hispanic communities accounting for 18% and 9%, respectively. This diversity offered Huldah a promising base of support as she campaigned to represent a community of many backgrounds.
Expressing her gratitude after the win, Huldah described her election as “history in the making.” She added, “I am excited, I cannot believe it. We worked so hard to get to this point.” For her, this victory is only the beginning of a larger vision to create an inclusive community that celebrates its diverse heritage. She stated, “We have an opportunity here to build bridges and foster a community that celebrates everyone’s heritage and potential.”
Momanyi’s journey to this milestone reflects resilience and determination. Born in Nyamira County, Kenya, her family moved to the United States in the 1990s, following her father, who had immigrated years earlier. After nearly two decades of life in America, Huldah decided to step into the political arena, aspiring at one point to be Minnesota’s first Black female state senator. Throughout her career, the 39-year-old mother of two has championed policies that emphasize community welfare and equity, advocating for legislation that serves all, regardless of background or economic status.
Meanwhile, Minnesota saw another historic win as Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American and fellow Democrat, secured her fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota’s 5th District. Omar, one of just three Muslim women in Congress, represents a voice for progressive change alongside her “Squad” colleagues, including Representative Rashida Tlaib. Together, these victories mark a notable chapter in Minnesota’s evolving political landscape.
