Horrific Murder of Margaret Mbitu: Kevin Kang’ethe Stabbed Her 10 Times Before Fleeing to Kenya
A harrowing testimony unfolded at the Suffolk Superior Court in Boston on Tuesday as prosecutors detailed the brutal murder of Margaret Mbitu, allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend, Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe. The court heard that Kang’ethe, who had fled to Kenya before being extradited to the United States, is accused of stabbing Mbitu ten times in the face and neck on October 31, 2023.
Mbitu’s lifeless body was discovered in an SUV at Boston Logan International Airport during a search initiated after she was reported missing. Prosecutors described how Kang’ethe meticulously planned the attack, meeting Mbitu outside her workplace and driving her home in her own car, which was under his name. The ride turned fatal as he unleashed a violent attack on her.
The prosecution revealed that after the murder, Kang’ethe answered phone calls from Mbitu’s worried family and coworkers, deceptively assuring them that she was injured but alive. He later disposed of her phone in a dumpster in Chelsea, a move that helped detectives trace him through surveillance footage.
The gruesome discovery was made 30 hours later when Mbitu’s body was found face down in the reclined front seat of the car, her lifeless form concealed under various items to avoid suspicion.
In court, Mbitu’s family shared their grief and determination for justice. Her cousin, Mary Kinyariro, voiced the family’s resolve, stating, “It has been a long journey coming. Today gives us hope and represents a step forward toward justice.” Another cousin, Joel Muhoro, reminisced about Mbitu’s dreams and the void her death has left in their lives, describing her as a kind, generous woman who aspired to be a nurse practitioner.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden emphasized the significance of the court proceedings, expressing hope for justice. “She was deeply loved, she was a caregiver, a nurse beloved by every patient that she served, a beautiful soul and a wonderful daughter and a loving sister,” Hayden said.
Kang’ethe, who pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, was denied bail. The case is scheduled for mention on November 5.
